Livid Instruments Makers of the Ohm64 and Block Goes DIY

Livid Instruments announces their new DIY line of components. This new implementation will give you everything you need to create controller that fits YOUR needs! You buy, "The Brain" which is the controller that everything connects to and then just add the right sliders, switches, knobs, LEDs, etc.. One of the nice features of this new modular system is that it comes with a graphical application to tell, "The Brain" what to expect for I/O and allows you to configure it from within the GUI. This is a really great system for people who are looking to get into building their own controllers. One last thing to mention is that Livid uses quality components so you are getting great quality stuff.

Livid Unveils Builder, Modular DIY Controller Engineering for Musicians

February 22nd, 2010 - Austin, TX -  Livid Instruments announced today Livid Builder, a modular do-it-yourself hardware system for creating MIDI control surfaces using buttons, knobs, sliders, sensors, and LEDs. Inspired by Livid’'s desire for a more open-minded hardware, Builder provides a platform for creating control surfaces with professional components without having to be a professional engineer.

"We started Livid to create quality hand made instruments without sacrificing craftsmanship, ideals, or inventiveness. The Builder line expands on our core values and opens up Livid as a resource for makers looking to do the same" Explains Jay Smith Founder of Livid Instruments. “We keep finding ourselves in conversations about MIDI controllers that always start with 'I like this but what if...', and then never seem to end in the same place. People want custom stuff, so with Builder, we can enable that without the burden of costly tooling and setup fees. Making your own controller just got very inexpensive.”

The Builder line centers around a class-compliant, bi-directional, USB-powered MIDI device aptly called the Brain, and the BYOB (Build Your Own Board), a series of perforated modular circuit boards. The Brain can be configured using the open-source Brain Editor application to configure and set custom MIDI mappings. The Brain even supports multiplexed (matrix) button and LED connections and provide USB and standard MIDI in and out jacks.

The BYOB line includes a variety of modular perforated circuit boards; Push, Slide, Turn and Breakout. Each board can accommodate multiple configurations and is pre-scored to allow you to easily create a configuration for your design. Buttons can be arranged in grids, lines, or even organic shapes to match your hand. This method of hands-on, rapid prototyping can quickly produce the exact instrument you want, and even inspire new ideas.

In addition to the Builder line, Livid offers many of the same high quality components used in their own control surfaces for purchase from their online shop. Livid Builder and components such as rubber keypads, potentiometers, and LED's, will be available for purchase on March 1st from Lividinstruments.com
