max4live.info rumor mill: Jazzmutant Lemur and Max For Live Integration

Jazzmutant's Lemur could possibly be one of the most innovative control surfaces that exists so far. They have worked very hard on creating a platform that not only gives you a multitouch screen, but also gives you ways to interact with the screen. The existing operating system provides capabilities like physics that allow you to create movement based energy, force and other parameters. Additionally, the Lemur comes with a nice Javascript implementation for creating other interactive elements.

This is where the Lemur is right now. But, Where is it going? Max4live.info has recently spoke to a lot of people in the industry and we have gathered some information that seems pretty consistent across the board. As a disclaimer, we have to say that this information is still rumor and speculation, but we believe it to be pretty close to the truth.

Jazzmutant has already announced on their forums that they are working on something for M4L. What that something is, they will not say. So here is what i gathered.
The rumor is that Max For Live integration will include the following features:

  • A Default Live Clip Launcher mode that works right out of the box
  • Ability to manipulate (create, add, remove, etc..) objects on the Lemur screen right from inside M4L
  • Ability to change templates from within M4L

These are the few bits of information that seemed pretty consistent. We will definitely modify this information as we get more information. These are already some nice tidbits. The fact that you will be able to buy a Lemur with default functionality seems like a very solid proposition for people who are just getting into programming the control surfaces. The clip launcher functionality means that, "out of the box", you can plug the Lemur in and get going. Then, when you are ready to add more functionality, you can add elements right from within the M4L environment.

We here at max4live.info are very excited about the potential of this new OS. We don't believe that existing Lemur owners will be left out as it should be a OS upgrade to get the new functionality. We will have to wait and see, but it looks like a very exciting future for Jazzmutant and the Lemur. Stay tuned for updates and more info as we get it!

Where they should head... :-)

The new Mac Tablet..... why

1> the Mac Tablet will be less than half the cost of the Lemur - apple will employ economies of scale that Jazzmutant can never realize

2>software margins are significantly higher than hardware margins....inventory, cost of manufacturing, cost of goods sold, customer service, warranties, etc.. all go away when you are purely a software company... simpler and more profitable business model

3> the installed base of the apple tablet will be huge...the user has already made the hardware investment... so now it's smaller software sale that adds to the utility of that investment...much easier sale

Bottom line - lose the hardware

My 2 cents... :-)

Love the product but can't justify the price....

Max For Live and Lemur

@DavidHenderson

I agree that it is going to be a little tougher for Jazzmutant when true multitouch monitors really start to hit the market at a reasonable price. You have to remember that most multitouch monitors at this point are 2 finger. They are just starting to release 10-finger and more.

Here are the things you have to consider.

- A multitouch monitor does not come with all of the extra goodies like the Lemur.
- Physics
- Widgets
- Max For Live integration
- The ability to use a standalone device without having to be near a computer
- Lots of support

- I do think that Jazzmutant knows that there will be a time when multitouch monitors combined with good software will be competition. I do, however, think there is a decent amount of value added features provided with the Lemur that currently a monitor is not going to give you alone. Maybe Jazzmutant will provide software when it gets to the point that the integrated solution is not selling as well. Who knows. I am sure they have something up their sleeves. They are a pretty smart company.

The Lemur has a built in programming language. You can create simple applications that interact with the widgets on the Lemur.

Lemur Programming

Not just simple applications.
There are many examples of complex sequencers and controllers that run entirely on the Lemur. (for example, http://rick-hawkins.blogspot.com/2010/01/esowave-sequencer.html)

I think that the Apple tablet may well shake things up but as Lemur owner I hope this rumour is true.

Wow... I definitely need a copy of that. Yeah, "simple programs" was probably not the right term. :-)

m4l and lemur

True Rick,
and your sequ is a great example of this! :)

But - and this is a pitty - the clock on the Lemur is not reliable. So I guess if you want to sync your sequ to your DAW or want a stable drum-step-sequencer it is again up to max or m4l.
Well, there are only a few Lemurs out there, and even less use m4l. So there might be only 100 people (?) waiting for m4l+Lemur, while 100000 want m4l+Launchpad.... Anyway, I hope the Mutants come up with something as long as they stated months ago that they hired "Hot shots" for this.....hmmmmm,....

Thanks...

@Mat

Thanks for the kind words. I am thinking that the whole M4L thing might inspire people to buy the Lemur. I think the integration is going to be really nice.

On a side note... I met the Glitch mob at NAMM and even though they were using midi maps to Live, their performance was great!

This will be an IPad app shortly...

No more Apple iPad hype -vs- Lemur

JazzMutant need not worry about the iPad. The Lemur will be separate and distinct from whatever type of app(s) are created and used on the iPad for music.

And sure, we love Apple for the great things they put out but until they offer a full blown Tablet Mac and not just a touch-screen media unit, stay away from those false hopes of acquiring the new thing that could offer performance like, but....
is just a bunch of hope.

TouchOSC is fun, it does things, but is fun on the iPod - not for live performances

Imagine if you went to a rock bar and saw the lead singer holding his/her iPod headphones to the mic?

Imagine going to the movies and seeing the movie off of one of those cellphones with the projector?

Not interested?

Well, real hardware/control units should remain in the book of etiquette for performers.

iPad apps are for fun - not real music making and sure you can get a beat on some apps, move some
elements in a real program but damn......

iPad is not the Touchscreen MacTablet so don't be confused by what it is and what you think it is.

Secondly, touchscreen monitors

Touch screen monitors with 10-finger and even 10-toe multi-touch would be great for the studio and online twister (large screen), but that still won't replace the Lemur's portability - so they will be great in the studio, but you likely won't catch many lugging around two monitors to a gig. They will just be upgrades to your studio.

And I don't hear anyone ranting and raving about their HP or Sony TouchScreen computers so, yep...definately for the studio.

JazzMutant need not worry about that too.

Lastly, If JazzMutant does anything working with MaxForLive it would only benefit JazzMutant users. So for those who do not have a Lemur, the iPad is an important "possibility" but not at all a potential tool to make using Live and other programs greater.

Clip Launchers

There have been clip launchers for a while that utilize the Python OSC library. The difference with the new one is how it is implemented in M4L. I don't know the specifics, this is all just rumor and speculation at this point. From what I hear, it is going to be some amazing stuff!!!

Lemur M4L Clip Launcher

Edit: I have confirmed with a few industry sources who say this does appear to be the new M4L Clip Launcher in use. We will just have to wait and see! Good stuff from whoever sent that in!!!
